The heart of the GSS System is the Registry, where all data on the reduced, purchased and retired greenhouse gas emissions are recorded.

All key operations and data are saved using Blockchain technology.
As part of the GSS System, a dedicated IT platform registers:

  • System participants,
  • Audit data,
  • Data for calculating the reduction of GHG emissions,
  • Data on GHG emission units,
  • GSS units,
  • Data on certificates.

The flow of key information, events and data is carried out in the GSS IT system based on the blockchain smart contracts mechanism.

Creation of GSS Units – avoided and absorbed GHG emissions
The parameters and code of the calculation algorithm are stored in the blockchain. Calculating the reduction, avoided emission or GHG removal from a project under the GSS system is initiated as part of a smart contract using Blockchain technology. The monitoring data is provided under the contract for calculation.

The calculated GHG reduction or removal must be accepted by an independent verifier. The verified GHG reduction along with the calculation report and the exact versions of the parameters and the algorithm are automatically saved as part of a smart contract in Blockchain.

Entering data into the GSS IT system
The data used to calculate the emissions are entered by GSS employees in cooperation with the System Participant to the GSS IT system validated by an external validator.

The data entered is verified by an independent external verifier. The data is confirmed directly by the verifier both in the GSS IT system and in the biogas installation.


The GSS IT application is made entirely in cloud technology. This means high security and operational efficiency.

The data collected in the system is located in an islotaed ecosystem ensuring their full replication.


Calculating units for a single year of reduction project operation generates up to 1 million lines of logs that are saved on the blockchain. This means that for each certificate and each tonne of emission reduction, its calculation can be fully reproduced, including parameters and indicators.

The GSS IT system has full information from which conversion area each ton comes from. The level of detail of the data allows you to determine that a given tonne comes from cattle manure accepted for a specific biogas plant in Q1 2020 and to include information on all conversion aspects.

This means full transparency and security of the GSS unit calculation mechanism.


Each GSS unit is directly related to data in the form of:

  • Type of emission: emission avoided, emission removed,
  • Source of origin,
  • Year of the reduction (vintage),
  • Sustainable development criteria,
  • Location.

The owner of GSS Units can obtain the following data on the owned GSS Units in the Registry:

  • Type of emissions covered by the certificate: avoided, removed, reduced,
  • The sectoral scope from which the emission comes from, e.g. biogas project,
  • The years from which the GSS units come from (vintage),
  • Country of origin of GSS units,
  • Sustainable development criteria covered by GSS units.

All key information is saved in the GSS IT system using blockchain technology.

The GSS IT system provides:

  • Continuity of records over time – ensures the invariability of data stored in the system,
  • The ability to track data and events in the system. Related information is stored in the appropriate blockchain nodes, such as:
    • an agreement signed with a system participant,
    • audit results,
    • calculation results of GSS units,
    • register of GSS units,
    • information on the surrendering of GSS units.

It is possible to audit all data in the system by a trusted third party. The architecture of the GSS information system enables the creation of a blockchain node containing all key information about events and data processed with a trusted third party, which allows for real-time data auditing.


The GSS IT system is supported by the latest artificial intelligence technologies that ensure the correctness of the entered data. The system independently takes care of the quality of input data from the installation.

GSS’s AI uses many technologies in the field of:

  • machine learning,
  • neural networks,
  • big data analysis.

Self-learning model of AI emissions calculation
Additional calculations of avoided and absorbed emissions are made by using AI. At GSS, we use the mechanisms of neural networks and machine learning to systematically train models that monitor the quality of the entered data and the correctness of calculations made under the GSS CERT System.

The system learns the calculation methods implemented in accordance with the GSS CERT guidelines, checking the correctness of the entered data and calculations of the avoided and removed GHG emissions. This ensures a very high quality of the GSS offset units, which are constantly controlled also before their final approval by an external verifier.

How does the AI model work?
The system collects real data from many sources – data on forestry, biogas plants, land-use projects. The calculation model of GHG emissions is also based on a great deal of scientific research. This means that our system is able to analyze the data and then provide guidance on adjustments to the calculation model that must be approved by the System’s scientific committee.
